Welcome to Xanadu Gallery and Art Business Academy’s Online Critique Group.
In each Critique Group meeting, we will examine a member artist’s artwork. We will review the quality and consistency of the work, talk about strengths and weaknesses in the work itself, and discuss the pricing and marketability of the submitted artwork. This is an opportunity for the featured artist to get feedback on his/her art and art career, and for everyone participating to gain insights into what makes great art.
Participation in the group is completely free, and you can either join our meetings live from your computer or mobile device during the broadcast, or watch the recording after the broadcast is completed. Just return to this page at broadcast start time to join live, or come back to this page anytime and scroll down to view archived recordings of past sessions.

What Questions Would you Like to Have Answered About Your Art During a Review Session? | 1) How diverse can the subject matter be and still read as a cohesive body of work? 2) I recently started to prefer a rigid surface as opposed to gallery-wrapped canvas. Right now this represents a little over half of my work. Should I wait to approach galleries until I have more of my work on my preferred surface? 3) This past March, I challenged myself to paint 30 miniature works in 30 days and offer them on Instagram as a way to raise funds for an artist residency scheduled for this summer. I sold more of them than I expected. It attracted a wider audience and sparked a new series of very small works. So….. How might a gallery feel if I reserved that new section of my art for my subscribers and offered the gallery only the works over a certain size/price range? 4) As I researched other artists’ pricing practices, They were all over the map. I settled on a method and structure that seems to work. However, my profit margin may shrink significantly with the addition of gallery commissions and shipping. How can I keep myself, my gallery, and my private collectors all happy? |

What Questions Would you Like to Have Answered About Your Art During a Review Session? | Am I too regional? Should I paint a broader subject, ie beaches, palm trees etc to reach a broader audience? What Questions Would you Like to Have Answered About Your Art During a Review Session? | I plan to start approaching galleries in 2022 and I’d appreciate any guidance on how to present my work most effectively – stick with one style for example? These questions relate to this goal. 1. The last couple of paintings incorporate different methods than the first three. I don’t like to be restricted to one look but is it a disservice to present them together in exhibitions? 2. What aspects are visually more appealing to you and where can I improve? 3. Is less, more? See “Sailing” v others… 4. I struggle with whether to add a signature on the front? I’ve been playing around with Krink graffiti markers which would add more of a street art look and be fairly prominent. A big change. |

What Questions Would you Like to Have Answered About Your Art During a Review Session? | PRICING is my BIG question… what I create is unique in that I’m having a hard time finding comps for price comparison. How does one get over the self-imposed obstacle of not having artistic pedigree? (ie: I didn’t study art technique… my parents weren’t artists.) I live in an extremely rural area and know I must reach out to a bigger market such as Minneapolis/St Paul… I see this as a really tough sell. |
